10 Tips for Making Your Grocery Shopping Healthier
Healthy eating actually starts not in the kitchen, but in the supermarket. If you don’t have the right ingredients, preparing healthy meals won’t be possible.
All supermarkets are designed to make people buy more food, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to return from grocery shopping with only healthy and necessary items. Here are a few successful suggestions to help you successfully complete this challenging task:
Plan your grocery shopping!
Grocery shopping doesn’t actually begin when you go to the supermarket, but when you decide to go. Therefore, planning what you need to buy beforehand and creating a grocery list will help you complete your shopping without deviating from your goal.
Don’t shop when you’re hungry!
Unfortunately, when we’re hungry, we tend to satisfy our eyes before our stomachs. While we could be satisfied with a healthy plate of food, when we’re hungry, our blood sugar drops, leading us to gravitate towards unhealthy foods and consume larger quantities than we normally would. Therefore, it’s best not to go grocery shopping when you’re hungry.
Stay away from the junk food aisle!
I’ve always believed in the saying, “Out of sight, out of mind.” If we don’t keep junk food at home, we’ll consume it less often. Therefore, avoiding the junk food aisle in the supermarket will reduce our tendency to buy it.
Pay attention to the “100%” label!
Make sure the products you buy are labeled “100%.” Labels like “Made from 100% fruit” or “Made from 100% whole grains” help you find products without added sugar or additives.
Stay away from packaged products with more than five ingredients!
Especially avoid products containing unknown additives whose names you’ve never heard or can’t even pronounce. The more additives, the unhealthier the food.
Don’t choose “ready-made” products! Ready-made soups, ready-made puddings, ready-made coffees… If you prepare these products yourself instead of consuming them ready-made, you can protect yourself from many additives, excessive salt, and sugar.
Read the labels!
The easiest way to find out if all the products you pick up are healthy, how many calories they contain, which nutrients those calories come from, whether they contain added sugar, etc., is to read the labels!
Try to choose seasonal products!
Consuming seasonal foods such as fruits, vegetables, and fish in season will further increase the benefits of these nutrients.
Don’t be lazy about baking!
If you crave cake, instead of buying ready-made, sugary packaged cakes, it would be a much better decision to buy the ingredients you can use to bake a healthy cake (oats, dried fruits, whole wheat flour, etc.). This way, you can satisfy your craving while still maintaining a healthy diet!
